I've been calling Modern Western Squares since 1989, and Contras since 2007. I have over 30 years experience in teaching and leading social dance. I love everything from teaching beginners to satisfying seasoned dancers.

I call contra dances around Northern California, including Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, Palo Alto, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Hayward, Berkeley, and Santa Barbara, as well as some while traveling. I call both traditional and "gender role free" contra dances.

I am a member of the Country Dance and Song Society, MCDC, TDSC, BACDS, SFBQCD, and LCFD and call contra dances regularly in those communities. I've called the GODS weekend in Gainesville, Orange Blossom Ball II in Orlando, the LCFD gender-free dance camp weekend in Woodstock, CT, TFOOTD Fall Ball weekend in St. Petersburg, and at Catapult Showcase 2017!  In August 2017, I was on the calling staff at CDSS American Week (Pinewoods) where I called contras and taught a course on "Modern Western Square Dancing for Contra Dancers".  In August 2018, I went on my first "tour" with a band: Polaris & I had 7 gigs in Seattle, Portland, the Northern California. Also in 2018, I was the headline caller at the Burning Man Contradance Camp (aka "contraburners") and called 5 nights in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada with music by Countercurrent. In 2019 I was one of 3 callers for Orange Blossom Ball VII in Daytona, with music by Giant Robot Dance and The Moving Violations. In November 2019 I called the NM FolkMADS Boo Camp weekend outside Taos, NM with music by Sandra & Rodney and The Cheap Shots.

My Modern Western Square Dance (MWSD) calling skills are less in use these days, but I call monthly for the Sage Stompers in Seaside, CA and for the Outlaws in San Jose, CA. I am a member of CALLERLAB, a past president of the Gay Callers Association, and was a member of the Santa Clara Valley Callers Association. I am BMI & ASCAP licensed. I call everything from fun nights through C1.

I have been a staff caller at 6 annual conventions of the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs (IAGSDC), and called at 7 National Square Dance Conventions. For many years, I was club caller for El Camino Reelers in Palo Alto and taught Basic/Mainstream classes for Foggy City Dancers in San Francisco where I also did some calling/teaching for Midnight Squares. I've called in 25 US States, the District of Columbia, and in Vancouver and Toronto Canada. In 1993 I traveled with a group of Gay & Lesbian square dancers to Russia and Latvia & got to teach and call with a simultaneous translator! In 1996 I went with another group to Australia (where less translation was needed).

I am also a caller coach, working with both new and experienced callers. I've been on the staff of the GCA Caller School, Rhythm Records Caller School, the Northeast Caller School, and the Alguire Memorial Callers School.

In 2002, Betsy Gotta presented the Golden Boot Award to me at the 19th annual IAGSDC convention. I awarded it to Rick Hawes at the 20th convention in 2003.

Also see my page in the IAGSDC history wiki.

I serve on the board of Traditional Dancers of Santa Cruz, and was a member of the board of Lavender Country and Folk Dancers, and a trustee of St. Mark's School of Texas in Dallas, TX from 2007-2010.

Blurb for flyers/publicity:

Andy Shore has been teaching & leading social dances since 1989, and calling contras since 2007. He calls regularly around northern and central California as well as farther afield. With 30 years of calling experience, Andy loves everything from teaching beginners to satisfying seasoned dancers. Dancers enjoy Andy's clear and concise walk-throughs and his dry wit while he takes them on a journey through choreography and music.
