TDSC did a special outdoor dance in Abbot Square in downtown Santa Cruz. The space is a busy outdoor area outside the popular food court at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. We laid down a temporary floor over concrete, and erected a small stage for the band and myself. Unfortunately, Abbott Square often becomes a wind tunnel for the otherwise delightful afternoon breezes that Santa Cruz is known for. The band -- Paul Rangell (fiddle, mandolin), Chris Jong (fiddle, banjo), and Emily Abbink (guitar) -- and Craig on sound struggled against the wind and cool weather, but the turnout was great and the small floor was packed for the entire program. We definitely enticed some newcomers to try it, and others just watched and enjoyed the music. I called a variety of simple dances:
"The Lucky 7" [Circle Mixer]
"Greetings" by Tori Barone
"Patience" by Chris Page
"Back of the Envelope" by Dugan Murphy
"Rock Creek Reel" by David Harris
"Appetizer" by Scott Higgs
"Simplicity Give & Take" by Linda Leslie
"Star of the Show" by Melanie Axel-Lute
"Heartbeat Contra" by Don Flaherty
"Classical Contra" by Lisa Greenleaf
"Mama Loo’s Reel" by Gene Hubert
